University of Kansas assistant head football coach Clint Bowen will be the keynote speaker at the annual Lawrence Schools Foundation Community Education Breakfast on September 18, 2015. Bowen, a Lawrence native and 1990 Lawrence High School graduate, has served on the KU football coaching staff for 17 years. He was named the program’s interim head coach for the final eight games of 2014, and will be the team’s defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2015.
The Community Education Breakfast is the Foundation’s biggest event of the year and raises money to support early childhood education, innovative teaching and learning opportunities and recognition of teachers and outstanding student achievement. Sponsorships and tickets are available through the Lawrence Schools Foundation website donation page.
The Bowen family has a long history with Lawrence Public Schools: Both of Bowen’s parents graduated from Lawrence High School, as have a number of cousins. In addition Bowen’s children currently attend Lawrence Public Schools.
After graduating from Lawrence High School, Bowen played football for one season at Butler County Community College and three years at the University of Kansas. As a senior, he led KU in tackles with 114. That figure still ranks as the third most tackles by a Jayhawk defensive back in school history. Bowen helped the Jayhawks earn a trip to the 1992 Aloha Bowl, where they defeated Brigham Young University and finished the year ranked 22nd in the county with an 8-4 record.
Bowen began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Kansas in 1996 before moving to Minnesota with head coach Glen Mason in 1997. He returned to KU and spent the 1998 and 1999 seasons in a graduate assistant role.
He earned a position in 2000 as the program’s Assistant Director of Football Operations before moving to on-the-field coaching from 2001-2009. Bowen spent the 2010 season as the defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky and the 2011 campaign at North
Texas in the same role. He returned to KU in 2012.
At the University of Kansas, Bowen has worked for five different head coaches, including Mason, Terry Allen, Mark Mangino, Charlie Weis and David Beaty.
Recent Community Education Breakfast alumni speakers include New York Times art critic Roberta Smith (2014), CBS writer/producer Corinne Brinkerhoff (2013), M.D. Anderson cancer researcher Dr. Larry Kwak (2012), Dimensional Fund Advisors CEO David Booth (2011) and Ford Motors CEO Alan Mulally (2010).
